The third event in the Wheeler Institute for Business and Development’s flagship ‘Rethinking Capitalism series – with Professors Esther Duflo and Abhijit Banerjee, who won the 2019 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty. Professor Elias Papaioannou will moderate the event.
COVID-19 has had severe consequences for the world economy, but history suggests that with a successful rollout of the vaccine and a return to normalcy, countries can rebound quickly. Drawing parallels from the post-WWII recovery, Professors Duflo and Banerjee will discuss the importance of government intervention and public policy to aid the economic recovery, whilst also emphasising that the world’s poorest countries will need additional help. Professor Papaioannou will lead the discussion with reference to Duflo and Banerjee’s latest book “Good Economics for Hard Times” and explore the importance of business in development, with particular emphasis on emerging countries. The webinar will conclude with an audience Q&A.
Esther Duflo is the Abdul Latif Jameel Professor of Poverty Alleviation and Development Economics in the Department of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a co-founder and co-director of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL). In her research, Duflo seeks to understand the economic lives of the poor, with the aim to help design and evaluate social policies. Esther Duflo has worked on health, education, financial inclusion, environment and governance.
Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee is the Ford Foundation International Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and co-founder of J-PAL with Esther Duflo and Sendhil Mullainathan. Banerjee is a past president of the Bureau for Research and Economic Analysis of Development, a Research Associate of the NBER, a CEPR research fellow, International Research Fellow of the Kiel Institute, a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Econometric Society. He has been a Guggenheim Fellow, an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow and a winner of the Infosys Prize.
Elias Papaioannou is Co-Academic Director of the Wheeler Institute for Business and Development and Professor of Economics at London Business School, focusing on international finance, political economy, applied econometrics, growth, and development. In the academic year 2019/2020, Elias held the Varian Visiting Professor of Economics at the MIT Department of Economics.
